A fecal and urine assessment can provide valuable information about your pet’s overall health. Fecal testing can be performed as part of a routine wellness exam or when your pet is ill. Many fecal tests are done on-site while others are completed at an external lab. Urine testing can provide valuable insights into the health of your dog’s urogenital tract, revealing such things as urinary tract infections, decreased organ function and endocrine issues.

Why are canine fecal examinations recommended yearly?

Often, parasites are hidden from view. Dogs can acquire parasites from their environment and through consuming rodents, slugs and feces of other animals. Some of these parasites are not covered with routine dewormers. Any dog that goes outside is at risk of coming in to contact with a variety of intestinal parasites. Regular fecal tests along with year-round parasite prevention are recommended to ensure that your pet is protected.

If my dog’s urine test reveals a urinary tract infection, what can I do?

If a urinary tract infection (UTI) is identified, your vet will discuss the best course of action. Treatment may include antibiotics, pain control/anti-inflammatories, dietary changes and/or further diagnostic tests. The medications chosen are dependent on the patient and the specific organisms identified.
