Fleas and Ticks

Ticks can be found attached to your dog’s skin and often resemble a skin tag. Ticks can begin very small and will grow and change colour as they feed. Ticks transmit a number of diseases that can be problematic for humans, so it is important to take care of yourself if you are in a tick-infested area. Fleas or flea dirt, which looks like pepper grinds, can often be seen frequenting the head, back and belly of dogs. It is important to remember a few things about fleas: indoor pets can get fleas, not all pets who have fleas will scratch and not all pets who scratch have fleas.

Many flea and tick products are available to be given orally or topically to kill these parasites or prevent them from attaching. These products are very safe and effective provided you have the right type for your pet and are administering as directed. Talk to your vet about what treatment is best for your pet.

Both oral and topical products are available to kill ticks or prevent them from attaching to your dog. Diligent inspection of your pet after potential exposure and prompt removal of ticks is also recommended.
