Assisting dog owners in identifying the underlying causes of their pet's behavioural issues.
Behavioural concerns are still one of the leading reasons why dogs are surrendered to shelters each year. While it can be difficult to overcome some behavioural problems, many are reversible with patience, understanding and the right approach. We are always happy to help you in preventing or correcting unwanted behaviours your pet may be displaying.
Many unwanted behaviours are the result of us not understanding our dog’s language or biological needs, inadvertently and unintentionally rewarding unwanted behaviours or taking ineffective approaches to correct their behaviours. Behavioural counselling will ensure a consistent, effective commitment to training and help determine the best path to eliminating or replacing unwanted behaviours.
The starting point to all behavioural consultations involves a complete physical exam. Diagnostics may also be requested (blood work and x-rays) to rule out underlying medical issues that could contribute to changes in behaviour. A thorough history of your dog’s physical and mental behaviours is gathered and discussed to help pinpoint any triggers or potential factors contributing to the behaviour. We will then work together to come up with a training plan, which may include referral to a local trainer, a veterinary behaviourist and/or medications or supplements.
Pet insurance is a wonderful thing, and there are many comprehensive plans available through a number of providers. The company and type of plan you have will determine your coverage amounts in different areas of medicine. For answers to your pet insurance questions, it is always best to contact your provider.
The outcome of your dog’s behaviour consult will vary depending on the nature and severity of the concerns. It is fair to say that even with minor problems, some level of daily homework is to be expected. Your veterinarian will be sure to discuss potential outcomes, follow up visits and next steps with you.
