The decision to proceed with humane euthanasia is best made in consultation with your veterinarian. Many people believe that euthanasia should be considered when the goal of maximizing comfort for your pet and minimizing suffering. If you have questions or concerns regarding your cat’s quality of life, please book an appointment to come in and talk with one of our veterinarians.
Our goal at Avon Animal Hospital is to make this extremely difficult time as easy as possible for you and your cat. On arrival, you will be ushered into a quiet room. If your cat is fearful or anxious, a sedative may be administered. An IV catheter will also be placed so that the medication can be administered with as little handling as possible, allowing you to be close to your kitty. When everything and everyone is ready, the final injection is administered intravenously. It is very quick and painless.
We encourage you to say goodbye in the way you are most comfortable. Many owners choose to stay with their cat through their final moments and for a few moments after too. We will support you in whatever decision you make, understanding that everyone deals with loss differently, and there is no right or wrong choice.
