Our advanced gastroscopy service provides accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment.
Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is a frequently underdiagnosed condition that is the root of many performance problems in all equine disciplines. While clinical signs can be very telling, the only true diagnosis is via simple gastroscopy. Passage of a special camera allows us to fully evaluate the lining of tall parts of the stomach, duodenum, and esophagus for ulceration, as well as other problems. Only then can suspicions be confirmed.
By ruling out ulcers, we can prevent unnecessary treatment and costs and look elsewhere for problems. For horses found to have ulcers, the most appropriate treatment protocol targeting specific areas of the stomach can be initiated with confidence. Avon is home to one of the few gastroscopes in Nova Scotia. Our gastroscope enables us to take video and still images for clients to review digitally. For your convenience, our facility allows for complete and hassle-free overnight fasting prior to the procedure, at no extra charge.
